Meeting Recap submitted by Angelique Lee
Children's Programming Team
Roger Clark Memorial Library
Present: Angelique Lee, April Hayden, Courtney Desena
1 We agreed to ask Marion if we could keep records of our efforts and notes on events at the Vox site so that there is continuity and a foundation for future Teams.
2 We discussed offering programming for infant through young adult, realizing that we will sometimes offer intergenerational programming.
3 State summer reading program starts in February. We are too late to join and receive funding per a phone call with our contact Rob Geissler, but he is providing us with a copy of the materials. We will offer local kids the opportunity to follow the program, but realize that most kids are probably already engaged at the Killington Library.
When we receive the performers list, Angelique will leave it at the library so we can all tag
our favorite ideas and see what consensus we can come to, and who is available. At that point
we will ask Marion for money. We hope to schedule performers on Saturday mornings.
4 Saturday shifts will become "Special Saturdays" where the volunteer will offer something our of the ordinary for kids, it will be announced on posters and our bulletin board. April will offer storytime and a craft, Angelique may just bring in muffins and lemonade, or set out a special book display on an interesting summer subject. The volunteer can do whatever they are comfortable doing, it is self determined.
5 Community Picnic is a time we would like to do something special to increase our circulation numbers, like offer a treat of some kind for Pittsfield kids when they take out a book. We probably need to revisit this, we didn't go beyond this.
6 We would definitely like to apply for a CliF grant, Angelique will call to confirm August deadline and start the paperwork. We discussed having a fundraiser at the Fall Bazaar to raise the $300 that we would need. Note that the Libri Foundation rural book grant also requires matching funds of $250 max, so we can aim extra high if we're up for it! Some ideas were face painting, balloon fund raiser with nice prizes, ice cream or creamees. We could have a big sidewalk chalk mural project as an attraction, April suggested something more permanent. Weeded kids books could be sold for a small donation. We are all going to give this some thought to the Bazaar.
7 We started a Wishlist for the children's section:
• Glider Rocker for moms
• Comfy floor pillows or beanbag chairs for kids
• Update toy/truck collection, add kid's kitchen (April may donate)
• Chalkboard
• Rug
• Carpet Squares (let's shoot for extra fun colors, no beige!)
• Markers/Crayons/Paper (I added this, my daughter suggested it)
• Rockers on the front porch
8 We started a "Kid's Picks" shelf. Courtney has been designated official designer and will create a beautiful sign for the black corner display. The display will ask kids to put a recommended book on the shelf, fill out an index card with their name and the reason it is good, and take a small packet of goldfish for their troubles. Courtney is also purchasing some plastic buckets for the goldfish, markers and index cards to hang from the display. April's daughter Maisy kicked off the shelf with a few of her favorite picks.
We will expand on this during the school year by contacting teachers at the Stockbridge and Killington schools to ask if local kids' book report projects can be featured at the library. This will give us a great program for grant money to purchase a display, current books driven by kid interests, and draw in more community. This is a good Turrell Fund program.
9 We discussed afterschool programming for the fall. Special Tuesday after-school snack and book time for kids getting off the bus. We will need an additional component to draw kids, something that encourages weekly participation. This is another Turrell Fund program.
10 We discussed starting a book donation program where the donor would be acknowledged with a special book plate, and a certificate or letter. This is for people to donate their favorite books, or hopefully to make a donation in honor of a friend or relative on their birthday or a holiday.
11 We are going to keep an eye out for local folk who may be able to share their interests, travels, talents, history, and skills at the library in the form of a program or display. We will share info with Marion, since she mentioned working on developing this resource.
