Carving Pumpkins
We had a fantastic turn out for our first after school program of the season. I would first like to thank Tracy, Angelique, Joyce, Don, Mark, Edie, Kris, Sarah, Karen and Jason for making this work. With out all the adults helping out, none of our programs would happen. I'd also like to thank Pittsfield Garden Center and Joe Desena for providing the pumpkins.
There are some days when I wonder if all the volunteer work is worth it, but when I see 26 kids having a great time with each other carving pumpkins, and then see them all hanging out in our library, I know it is worth it. Scroll down a bit to see a slideshow (photos by Lauren Mayer).
Halloween Night
Please stop by the library Halloween night, Sharon will be there with some surprises, and you will see all the pumpkins carved yesterday on display.
New Books
Sharon and Angelique took a book buying trip using some of our Turrell grant money. Look for lots of new additions to the Jr. non fiction section soon.

On Halloween night the Roger Clark Memorial Library had a surprise for trick or treaters. Every one of about 100 visitors got to choose from a table full of new books to add to their treat bag. We were able to do this thanks to a very generous donation of books from Sloan Weinberg, books from a Pathways Within grant, and a few other new children's book donations. The give away was so well received we plan to make this an annual event.
Sharon, who handed out all the books Halloween night said:
"The children were very excited about choosing a "free" book. The parents were ecstatic that it wasn't candy. Many people said either "I didn't know this was here" or "I've never been in here before" or I haven't been here since I was a kid". I definitely think it could be the start of a tradition."
Angelique, a regular library volunteer heard similar reactions:
" We live on the green, and heard lots of great feedback from parents and kids about the Library's book giveaway. My own kids were thrilled with their books, which I know will last longer than the candy! "
This has been a great week for the library. Joyce and a few other parents organized a crowd of kids during the Tuesday after school program to carve jack o lanterns. These joined the pumpkins carved for the VMBA contest to decorate the Library and the Green . Next week kids in the after school program can learn to make miniature books. The after school program meets Tuesdays 3:30 to 5 for children 2nd grade and up (younger kids welcome with parents).
