Pittsfield’s Library Offers Free Financial Planning Seminar
The Roger Clark Memorial Library is pleased to announce a free educational seminar on Retirement Planning on Wednesday May 28th at 7pm at the Pittsfield Town Hall. As part of our ongoing community outreach program we are pleased to offer this free presentation by Andrew Skroback, a chartered Financial Consultant and Chartered Life Underwriter and father and grandfather of local friend’s of the library family the Robertson’s.
This is a great opportunity for those adults who seek retirement security and want to learn more about financial planning and investment considerations. He will address eliminating the emotions ‘fear’ and ‘greed’ from investment decisions and define the risks faced by investors seeking to accumulate funds for a secure retirement, as well as discuss ‘ the dollar” and global investing. Please join us for this interesting evening.
A group of 10 volunteers showed up Sunday for our second library work day. We moved boxes, cataloged books, weeded shelves, set up new displays, updated spine tags, and generally spruced up books. Stop by, we add new books every week.
We have lots of plans for the summer including picnics, presentations, outdoor games, a big summer reading kick off and more. Our second Saturday of the month music and stories for toddlers will continue, and we'll start our Special Saturdays up again too. Check back here for details.
Have you noticed there are no photos lately? My camera's broken, I should have it back in a few weeks.
We need your help!!
Please join us for a library work day on Sunday, April 27th at noon. Since we are 100% volunteer-run, there is always lots to do - such as weeding shelves, processing new books, overdue notices, cleaning... Believe it or not, this can be fun - especially when the company is good and caffeinated beverages and baked goods are provided!
NO EXPERIENCE NEEDED.

This month we have special musical guest Kathleen Dolan. Kids 0 to 5 and their families are welcome.
Kathleen, with the help of an electronic keyboard synthesizer and recorded music, will facilitate a variety of musical experiences for the children and their families at the Pittsfield Library. These include playful rhythm chants, lap songs, songs involving large movement, simple props and instruments, dance and an instrumental play along. Children and their caretakers will be inspired to sing, move, invent simple song content and mostly play, relax and have a great musical time!
Thank you to all who attended last night's meeting of the Pittsfield Book Club. I do really enjoy getting together and talking about books (and other things) with you all!
The next book is "The Prizewinner of Defiance, Ohio".

We will next meet on Tuesday, April 29th, 6:30 pm at the Roger Clark Memorial Library.
See you then! Sharon Mayer
I am so proud to be a part of this community. Thank you to the volunteers who organized this program (Angelique, April, Courtney and Joyce,) to the volunteers who came and talked about their countries, and to all the kids who participated. Here is Angelique's report:
TRAVEL THE WORLD
At Tuesday's after school program 18 children traveled the world, getting their "passports" stamped along the way!
Multay Layan made a beautiful presentation of his home country Turkey. Everyone enjoyed a traditional Turkish breakfast of vegetables and bread and learned what it is like to grow up and live in Turkey through Mutlay's fantastic table top presentation and computer slideshow.
Monica represented her home country of Poland and taught the children many, many Polish words. There was a lot of giggling going on at her table, ask your kids what words they can remember!
John Teoh from China shared calligraphy, the lunar calendar, many Mandarin words, and the kids learned how to use chopsticks to pick up candy! Everyone sampled some delicious fried rice made by John's wife Linda.
Saskia Groom shared her home country of Holland. As you'll see from the photos, everyone learned a traditional dance wearing wooden shoes! Saskia kept the children riveted with stories of Holland and traditions, including architecture and food.
Thank you so very much to everyone who presented and helped with clean up. This program was an inspiring community effort, we're looking forward to putting it together again next year.
Our free Saturday morning Mandarin Chinese sessions for all ages have started up again. Join us and two middlebury students just back from a semester in China for fun interactive Chinese sessions. The sessions are aimed at small children but are open to ALL ages. Find out what common fruit is named to the left.
When: Saturday March 1 (1st and 3rd Saturdays) at 10:00am

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM - PRINTMAKING A BIG SUCCESS
a note from volunteer Angelique Lee:
Wow, We had a great time making prints today! 24 parents and kids made styrofoam prints and plexiglass monoprints. Everyone was so creative, it was very inspiring.
There is a special display of kids craft books at the library, including printmaking books. The library also has a printmaking kit containing waterbase ink, plexiglass plates and brayers (rollers) which can be checked out. Just save your styrofoam veggie or meat trays, and you can even print on your brown paper grocery bags, or whatever paper you like best.
A special thanks to the parents who made clean up a breeze, and pitched in with some great artwork themselves.
We'll get suited up, do some snowshoe activities in the field and woods behind the Library, then come in and warm up with a presentation on eating for sports, fitness and endurance. We'll have snacks too.
Don't forget to stop in the library to see this month's book display on Vermont sports with books for children, teens and adults on skiing, snowshoeing, running, endurance and more.
The program ends at 5:00 when the library closes. Our Tuesday after school program is for kids 2nd grade and older, but younger kids are encouraged to join in with a parent to help. Next week we'll return to our normal start time of 3:45 with a great Printmaking program.

With the arrival of the information age, some observers have predicted the end of the public library system. The contrary is in fact the truth. Vermonters are using their local libraries in unprecedented numbers. Between 1998 and 2005 circulation increased 14% and library visits increased 53%. In figures reported for the 2005-2006 school year the combined budgets of all of Vermont’s public libraries added up to less than 1.4 % of public schools spending. Although libraries are arguably the best educational bargain in the state for our citizens, the sea change in library use is stressing many public libraries to the breaking point.
